Tsukiyasha 3 – Ubukata Misao

CV: Tachibana Shinnosuke

Track 1

Hmm? Are you finally awake?

Good morning.

I’m sorry for drinking your blood all of a sudden.

It’s no good doing that. Just stay still and let me drink your blood until I’m satisfied.

I thought I’d wait until you woke up, but I couldn’t bear it.

Just hold on for a little longer, I’m not going to kill you.

You’re trying so hard. Are you that desperate to escape?

You can’t do that though.

[01:02]
There’s a fine meal in front of me. You’ve got to put up with this until I’m full.

So this is the blood of Himiko’s [1] descendant? Its quality certainly is different.

It’s much more delicious than any blood I’ve tasted before.

And… You don’t have any experience with men yet, do you?

That makes me happy. I particularly like the blood of virgins.

Hmm? It hurts?

That’s alright. It’ll feel good soon enough. So I can drink a little more, can’t I?

[02:05]
Your body has lost its strength, hasn’t it?

It’s fine for you to surrender yourself to me.

I’ll give you pleasure that you’ve never experienced.

Hmm? Oh?

Ah… Instead of experiencing pleasure, you’re feeling dizzy because of anaemia.

Oh… I drank too much blood.

I’m sorry.

[1] Himiko was a queen in ancient Japan, from 189AD-248AD.

Track 2

Ah… You’re awake. Good morning.

You really do sleep a lot. It’s already afternoon.

Hmm? What’s the matter?

Your eyes are open so wide… You don’t seem to be half-asleep though.

You’re so loud! Can’t you stop that?

Don’t scream when you’re this close.

You’re scared of me? I see…

So that’s how humans react when their blood is drunk. It’s been so long that I forgot.

When I drink someone else’s blood, they usually can’t tell what’s happening because of the pleasure they’re experiencing. They don’t even have time to feel any pain.

I don’t let them live, so they die while still holding onto me tightly.

[01:01]
Sorry that I scared you by letting you live.

I actually wanted to let you die a pleasurable death, but you’re a descendant of Himiko. I can’t kill you.

Apparently, sleeping with someone while they drink your blood feels amazing. I also enjoy doing that when I drink someone else’s blood. However, you’re a virgin, so I’d be happy if your blood continued to be delicious. That’s why I’m not going to sleep with you. You won’t be able to experience the most pleasurable way of having your blood drunk, but I’ll still make you feel good, so could you just try and put up with it?

Why have you got that expression on your face? Your mouth is wide open.

[02:01]
I can’t bear how ridiculous your face looks, so close your mouth.

Hmm? Is there something you don’t understand?

Everything? You’ve never heard of yasha then?

I see! You haven’t heard of them.

Hmm… I can understand why you’ve got that ridiculous look on your face then.

What did you think I was? An abnormal person who enjoyed drinking blood?

Well, perhaps there’s not much difference… But it’ll be inconvenient for you to live here without knowing what yasha are, so I’m going to tell you.

Yasha are demons which drink the blood of humans and eat them head-first when they’ve finished.

[03:11]
So after I’ve drunk your blood a few times, you’re destined to die by being eaten head-first.

I like that look on your face! Are you feeling a sense of despair?

Are you thinking about what an unfortunate person you are?

Of course it was a joke. Those things are just superstition.

Just look at my fangs.

See. They wouldn’t be able to break bones apart, would they?

The fangs yasha have are just for tearing into skin. I don’t eat human flesh or bones.

[04:09]
The only thing I like is the bright red blood which looks like camellias.

We yasha can’t survive without drinking blood.

Well, I suppose that might make us like demons. Quite a lot of people know about yasha in the countryside. There are rumours about yasha spreading around Hokkaido at present. Didn’t you know about them? Why not?

Hmm… So your parents died and you recently arrived in Hokkaido with the help of a distant relative.

That means you don’t have any family then.

That’s even more convenient. I don’t have to worry about keeping you imprisoned here.

[05:03]
Hmm? You’re going to spend the rest of your life here at the Reimeikan.

There are six yasha living here, including me.

Ah, I didn’t tell you my name yet. I’m Ubukata Misao.

You can call me by my first name. I hope we’ll get along well.

You haven’t met the other yasha yet, have you?

Ah. So the only other one you’ve met is Kiri-chan?

You know, the guy with the eyepatch. The guy who kidnapped you is a yasha just like me. He lives at the Reimeikan too.

Well… You’re the only human in this house and you’ll provide food for us everyday.

We’ll drink plenty of your blood, so I’m sure you’ll feel really good every single day…

[06:10]
Oh? You look quite pale.

Are you scared?

Living in this place and being treated like food… This can’t be happening! I’m going to escape!

Is that what you’re thinking?

You’re so honest!

Well… If that’s how you feel, then there’s nothing I can do about it.

I’ll show you the way into town then. Come here.

There’s no need to be so suspicious. Come with me.

It won’t sound that convincing, considering that I was the one who suddenly drank your blood, but I don’t like being forceful. So if you don’t want to be here, then I think that’s fine.

[07:02]
Come on. You’ll only get into trouble if you leave this house by yourself, so I’ll show you the way.

These stairs go to the entrance hall. It’s dark, so just watch your step.

Yes. I’ll show you the right way to the town. I’ve got something to do there anyway.

Ah… If I’m going to the town, then I should get changed. The entrance is right there, so can you wait a little while? I won’t be long.

Sorry I kept you waiting. Shall we go?

[08:05]
It’s so cold.

Hmm?

Ah… This police uniform suits me, doesn’t it?

I used to be a police officer, so this uniform is the real thing. I took it with me when I got fired.

Humans aren’t suspicious of me when I’m wearing this. So I always pretend to be a police officer whenever I visit the town.

Everyone’s talking about the yasha related rumours, you see. They’re all suspicious of strangers. It’s bothersome.

Well… Yasha look just like humans, so you can’t tell them apart. But when I disguise myself as a police officer, people trust me without question, so it’s convenient. No one would think a police officer was a yasha. It really helps that humans are so simple.

[09:15]
On the other hand, there’s also an idiot yasha who stands out too much because he wears something ridiculous like geta [1] in this day and age.

Hmm?

Ah, it was nothing! I just remembered someone annoying.

Are you that worried? It’s okay for you to run away.

I wouldn’t show you the way like this if it wasn’t okay. Don’t be so suspicious.

You’re welcome.

Ah… What am I going to do in the town? I’m going to drink the blood of the first person who calls out to me and then strangle them to death when I’m done with them.

[10:04]
Hmm? What’s the matter? There’s still a long way to go until we arrive at the town. You’ll get cold if you stand there instead of walking, won’t you?

Your face turns pale right away, doesn’t it?

What is it? Was my errand an unexpected one?

You see, yasha feel hunger too. But you said you wouldn’t give us any blood, didn’t you? So we don’t have any choice but to find it somewhere else, don’t we?

That’s right. If you run away from the Reimeikan, then we’ll kill other humans. Otherwise we won’t be able to survive. Well, I suppose it’s something unavoidable, isn’t it?

When we felt hungry, we’d always go into the town, kidnap someone, drink their blood until we were satisfied and then kill them. After that, we’d dump their body in the mountains.

[11:06]
You see… I’d be in trouble if I let them live and they told someone else that I was a yasha, wouldn’t I? That’s why so many people go missing from the town. All kinds of rumours are going around the town, such as that missing people were spirited away or that the ghosts of the Goryokaku [2] had something to do with it.

If we were always able to drink blood that was as strong and luxurious as yours, then we would have been satisfied and the people living in the town wouldn’t have been kidnapped anymore…

But you don’t want to live with us, do you? I don’t want to force you to do it either. So there’s nothing we can do about it after all. They could have finally been able to live in peace… I feel sorry for the townspeople.

Hmm? Ah… So you don’t even know your own worth, do you?

[12:02]
You’re a descendant of Queen Himiko, who existed many years ago. Himiko’s blood is something special to the yasha and it has the same effect as the blood of hundreds of normal humans. Your blood makes the blood of the yasha stronger and gives us energy.

To put it simply, I suppose it’s an incredibly delicious and nutritious secret medicine. I didn’t quite believe that such blood existed, but I understood when I drunk your blood yesterday. You certainly are special to us. You can satisfy all of us, but without you, we’ll have to kill and drink the blood of many humans, just like we did before.

Do you understand?

[13:07]
Hmm? What is it? I didn’t hear you. Could you say it one more time?

Oh? Is that so? You don’t want to run away anymore? I see.

If you say so, then I’ve got no reason to go to the town anymore.

Shall we go back to the house then?

Hey. Do you mind if I check something with you?

This means you’re agreeing to live at the Reimeikan, doesn’t it? Then you’ll give us your delicious blood anytime we want. Is that right?

Yes. You’re a good girl.

[14:02]
Then you’ll be spending the rest of your life at the Reimeikan and will belong to the yasha. You’ll be a captive princess for the time being.

Ah… That’s not right! You’ve chosen to live with us, so it’s not polite to call you a captive.

Look, we can already see the entrance. The way into the house where you’ll enjoy the rest of your life. Alright, we’re here.

Come here. Make sure to say “I’m home”.

[1] Geta are a type of traditional Japanese shoe made from wood.
[2] The Goryokaku is a fort located in Hokkaido which was built by the shogunate to protect the Tsugaru Strait from invasion by Russia. It is famous as the site of the Battle of Goryokaku (also known as the Battle of Hakodate), in which the new government army fought against the remnants of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Track 3

It’s me, Misao. I’m coming in.

My goodness… You don’t have to look that upset. I’m not going to eat you.

Don’t get so scared just because I drank your blood once. I want us to get on well with each other. At least look directly at me.

Do you understand?

I’m glad you do.

Can you come to the kitchen then?

I’ve got some castella. [1] I want you to eat a snack with me. You’ll come with me, won’t you?

[01:04]
Can you make some tea? I’ll cut the castella.

Yes, castella is my favourite food. I’m glad that Japan opened itself to the rest of the world.

You can even find a delicious sweet like this one in a place as remote as Hokkaido.

Ah… Yasha eat food, just like humans do.

We don’t have to eat food, but I suppose it’s a matter of preference.

I pretended to be a human for a long time too. I can’t relax if I don’t eat something at every meal.

Mmm… That smells good.

Thank you. Could you put the cup on that table?

Ah, you don’t have to make tea for yourself.

[02:03]
Alright, shall we eat?

I’m looking forward to this.

Hmm? Is something wrong?

Hahaha. Did you think there’d be some for you?

Oh dear… Did I mislead you?

There never was going to be any tea or castella for you.

You see… You’re my food, so there’s no need for me to share my food with you, is there?

Come here and hold out your hand.

Hurry up and do it. You’re not going to do as I say?

Yes… That’s right.

Excuse me a moment.

It’s a fascinatingly wonderful colour.

[03:04]
Hold your finger above the tea.

Ah… How nice. It smells wonderful. It seems that tea and blood go well together.

Drinking tea with jam is apparently a custom in the West, so I thought I’d imitate that.

As I expected, it is delicious. I like it.

Ah… That’s no good.

Don’t take your hand away. It’s still bleeding.

[04:01]
That’s my food too, so give it to me.

Your blood is a little too intense to have as a snack.

It’d be perfect for dinner.

But I prefer drinking human blood by sinking my fangs into their skin and running my tongue over the wound. I feel as if I have control over someone else that way.

Hmm? The blood has already stopped?

Never mind. I suppose I’ll eat the castella.

[05:04]
It’s delicious. Amazing.

Why are you staring at me? Do you want to eat some castella?

Hmm… I’ll let you eat some if you can entertain me.

Slowly eat some from here, while looking directly at me.

Hmm. You don’t want to do it? I see.

It’s so delicious though…

Eating something from another person’s mouth is nothing special in the red light district.

Even a shinzo [2] who has yet to experience her mizuage [3] is happy to try it, but you can’t?

[06:11]
Hmm… You’re not a prostitute?

Are you trying to say that you’re a refined person who’d offer their blood for the sake of others, so you shouldn’t be compared to a prostitute who sells herself?

That’s funny! I think you’re the one who is difficult to understand though. Isn’t a prostitute who sells herself for money much more intelligent?

There’s no way that I would waste the only life I’ve got on other people.

Ah… But your foolishness means you’re useful to us.

I should give you a reward every now and then.

I’ll share one slice with you. Eat up.

[07:07]
Alright. Say “ah”.

Were you really that hungry? You can help yourself to food from this kitchen.

Do that from now on.

So what do you think? Did it taste good?

I see. I’ll have some more then.

Let me see what the castella tastes like with blood.

I’m not going to let you escape. Come on, put out your tongue.

[08:06]
It tastes sweet. Your blood might be more delicious with castella, instead of being mixed into tea.

The inside of your mouth feels so wet.

Ah… That was delicious. Thank you for the food.

Are you crying? You thought for a moment that I was a kind person because I gave you some castella?

You’re so adorable. You’re a good-natured and foolish princess. That’s why someone can steal a kiss from you right away.

Was that your first kiss?

It’s become a good memory, hasn’t it?

Hey… Just stay like that forever, won’t you?

Then I’ll treat you with affection everyday.

[1] Castella is a popular sponge cake which was brought to Japan in the 16th century by Portuguese merchants.
[2] A shinzo is an apprentice courtesan.
[3] Mizuage is a ceremony in which the patron who sponsored a courtesan would have the right to take her virginity.

Track 4

Hmm? You’re there, aren’t you? Come out.

I thought it was you. Are you coming back from dinner?

Anyway… I was getting bored by myself. Stay with me a while.

I like talking to someone else while I’m cleaning my gun.

It takes a long time to do it properly.

Come on, sit down there.

By the way… Have you met the other yasha?

It doesn’t seem as if you get on well with them though.

You’re avoiding them because you’re afraid, aren’t you?

[01:00]
Wouldn’t you have passed by here quietly and gone back to your room if I hadn’t called out to you just now?

I suppose I was right. I think that’s only going to tire you out though.

We’re yasha, but it’s not as if we’re demons you can’t communicate with.

Why don’t you try and be friendly with them?

Aside from a certain yasha, they’re not such bad guys.

You can just avoid Hayato. He’s a meathead and his voice is so loud that it’s an annoyance. He’s the troublesome type of person that’s impossible to communicate with. If only he would hurry up and die. I dream of blowing his brains out with this gun. He’s faster and more uncontrollable than I thought he’d be though. He really is an annoyance.

[02:01]
Hmm? This gun?

No. I don’t use it for hunting. I use both the long and short guns to protect myself.

I use these guns for my own sake, you see.

Hmm? You don’t understand?

Well, I suppose you wouldn’t.

It’s quite difficult for yasha to live like humans do. In my case, I’m sure it would have been impossible if I hadn’t been able to use a gun.

Well… I practised all the time after I became a police officer. Then I was fortunate enough to receive a permit to carry a gun. After that, I went around everywhere as a human. I can’t even remember how many people I shot. It must be more than a hundred though.

[03:02]
Ah… Do you know what the most difficult experience I had during the war was?

Losing someone important to me?

Of course not! It’s nothing like that. It was having to drink blood in secret because I’d be in trouble if anyone found out that I was a yasha. Not being able to devour that blood, despite how much was flowing in front of me, really was difficult. It really was torture.

I did drain quite a few people of their blood when I had the chance though. I suppose what I enjoyed the most was biting into the neck of an enemy soldier who was paralysed with fear as he cried out “I don’t want to die!”, then draining his blood instead of shooting him. The terrifying news that he had been killed by a strange monster, rather than in battle, spread all around!

[04:12]
It was amazing… You don’t normally get to experience that level of fear.

Ah… Being a police officer really was a wonderful thing. If they want to blend in with humans, then yasha definitely must become police officers. You don’t have to be secretive about killing humans, and even if you say that you came across someone who had been drained of their blood, no one would suspect you if you explained that you were out on patrol. Even if there was evidence against you, an internal cover-up would be a piece of cake. It really was easy.

Anyway… I became a police officer so that I could live alongside humans, and having a gun was necessary for that.

[05:05]
Those nobodies who can only wield sabres would have to stab anyone they arrested. I didn’t want to be caught up in a spray of blood. It’d be no good if I lost control of myself.

That’s why I’m using this for my own protection. There’s no way that I’d go hunting. I’m not like Rei-chan. If I want to eat meat, then I just have to buy it in the town.

The reason I stopped being a police officer? It doesn’t really matter, does it?

By the way… Don’t you have something to say? Even though I asked you to make conversation with me, I’m the one doing all the talking.

Haven’t you got an interesting topic of conversation or a skill that’ll entertain me?

[06:02]
Hmm? This string? I use it to clean the barrel of the gun.

Alright then. There’s plenty of it. Why don’t you use it?

Hmm… You’re tying it… Making a loop…

What are you going to do next?

What? Are you making fun of me?

You made a cat’s cradle in the shape of a broom?

Hey… You thought I’d find that entertaining? You can’t be serious.

Of course it’s no good. It’s incredibly boring. Do something different.

[07:06]
Umm… What are you doing?

A turtle and a bridge? I see.

Can’t you stop that already? It’s going to make me yawn.

I wasn’t asking you to show me a different cat’s cradle. I was telling you to show me a different skill.

I’ve had enough. Why don’t you go away? You’re boring me.

Don’t leave the string here. If I see that string, I’ll be reminded of how boring that cat’s cradle was and I might even go to strangle you.

Alright. Bye bye!

Track 5

Hmm?

Ah… It’s you. Good morning. See you later.

What is it?

I’m going out. You can tell that without asking, can’t you?

I’m wearing my uniform too.

What? Why should I bring you with me?

It’s a bother, so I’ll pass.

Huh? This is quite troublesome…

So what is it? Have you decided to run away after all?

If that’s the case, then it seems to be a little late for that.

Ah… I see. So you’re just feeling lonely then?

Hmm… Well, I suppose that’s fine.

[01:01]
We’ll go our separate ways once we reach the town though. Is that alright?

Alright then. Travelling there together isn’t such a bother.

You should be able to help me pass the time on the long road to the town.

Even if we encounter a snowstorm, you’ll be useful as emergency provisions.

Why don’t you pray that there won’t be a snowstorm?

Hurry up and get ready. I’m going to leave after counting to ten.

Ah… It’s a sunny day. It looks like you won’t end up being used as emergency provisions. How unfortunate.

[02:04]
Hmm?

Ah… I’m going to buy some cigarettes in the town. I go out and buy them when the box is empty.

There’s a reason I don’t buy a lot of them. I like having an excuse to visit the town. So I’ve decided that I’ll only buy one box at a time.

Ah… We’re almost at the entrance to the town. You can see it, can’t you? Look.

We’ll go our separate ways here then. Do you know the way back?

Well… You’ve only been here once, so I suppose you wouldn’t know.

We’ll meet up before going back then. How about we meet at that tree over there after the moon rises?

[03:01]
It’s not that late, is it?

We came all the way down this mountain path, so wouldn’t it be a shame if we left right away? Let me do as I wish until the evening.

See you later.

Sorry I’m late. You’ve been waiting, haven’t you?

Hmm? Why have you got that look on your face?

You seem pretty tense. Was it that cold?

Then you should have stayed somewhere you could shelter from the wind until I came.

What is it now?

You’ve got a scary look on your face.

Ah…

[04:03]
I see. So you heard about it.

Hmm… I thought it’d be fine, but you found out more easily than I thought you would.

That’s right. The number of missing people in the town is as many as ever.

Since the time that you came to the Reimeikan, several people have gone missing.

The humans are afraid and their lives are becoming more difficult. It feels good.

What does that mean? It’s just as you’ve imagined. I kidnap the people living in the town, drink their blood and dispose of their bodies on the mountain when I no longer have a use for them. Things are the same as they were before you came here.

[05:05]
Hasn’t it taken you too long to notice?

Isn’t coming down to the town for just one box of cigarettes a strange thing to do? It’s ridiculous.

There’s no way I’d do that, is there?

Didn’t I tell you that I liked having an excuse to visit the town? I only had one true aim. Kidnapping someone at random and drinking their blood until I was satisfied. Wasn’t that obvious?

You’ve got a wonderful expression on your face! Shall I tell you something even more interesting?

Today I drained someone of their blood again. The prey I captured today was a man, so I had a hard time disposing of his body in the mountains. That’s why I was late getting back here.

[06:06]
My hands still smell like blood. Why don’t you try and smell them?

Ouch… Are you angry? Because this isn’t what we agreed…

You are, aren’t you? Well, that’s how it is.

But why did you think I’d keep that promise?

I don’t know about the other yasha, but to be completely honest, there’s no way that I’d keep a promise I made with you.

I’m cruel? I suppose so…

Hear me out though. I’ve got a perfectly good reason for it.

Your blood is particularly delicious, however, that kind of thing shouldn’t be enjoyed too often. If you don’t eat simple foods most of the time, then you’ll get tired of luxurious foods, won’t you?

[07:07]
I adore your blood, so I wouldn’t want something unfortunate like that to happen. So when I’m hungry, I usually make do with the residents of the town. That’s because your blood is something incredibly precious to me.

Well? That’s a good enough reason, isn’t it?

There’s no reason to cry, is there? There are more than enough humans around. You don’t have to worry about it, alright?

What’s that? Are you threatening me?

For your information, I’m not afraid of getting caught. I’m destined to die a painful death, you see.

[08:01]
If I get captured and stabbed or burned to death, it won’t matter to me at all. I’ll think about it when that time comes. I don’t care what happens next, the future will take care of itself.

I’m going to die someday. So until then I’m going to live the way I choose.

Tch. You’re such an annoyance.

I’m not afraid of dying. What’s the use of being afraid?

Come on, we’re going back. Don’t just keep crying, start walking.

Track 6

Oh? What’s the matter? What are you doing in the library this late at night?

Ah… Let me guess why you’re here.

You can’t sleep, so you came to find a book to pass the time with. Isn’t that right?

You’ve been looking like you haven’t had much sleep since the other day.

So it really shocked you when I broke my promise.

Ah… How cruel! You’re ignoring me?

Oh… So you’ve ended up hating me.

See you later. I hope you’ll have another sleepless night!

[01:10]
If I look fine to you, then there must be something wrong with your eyes.

Wait! You don’t have to call any of the others. It’ll calm down soon enough.

If they find out that I’m a yasha who suffers from this illness, they’ll look at me differently. I don’t want the other yasha looking at me that way too.

[02:14]
Why does my own blood taste so awful? If it was delicious, then I’d feel a little different.

Hey… Sorry, but could you wipe the floor? The others will find out if there’s a bloodstain there.

Ah… I’m so tired. I hate how unfortunate I am.

[03:09]
I’ve had enough. Of having been born a yasha. Of being affected by this illness. Everything.

I’m always the one who suffers. The world is an unfair place, isn’t it?

Who knows… What kind of illness could it be?

I don’t know what it’s called. I know that there is only one illness yasha can suffer from and once they get it, there’s no hope of being cured.

I have an incurable illness.

Hey… Why do you think these things always happen to me? Tell me why it’s so difficult to survive in this world.

[04:13]
That’s right. This isn’t my fault.

I’m just unlucky. I was born into a situation that I couldn’t do anything about on my own and I was always on the receiving end of bad luck.

But… You’re quite unlucky too, aren’t you?

You’re just like me. You were born as a descendant of Himiko and ended up becoming a caged bird for the rest of your life.

Poor you. You really are unlucky.

[05:12]
In that case, you should become even more unfortunate.

Become someone who is deeply unfortunate, a pitiful person who is even unluckier than I am. Make me feel at ease. Alright?

You should hurry up and understand that resisting won’t do any good. You’ve survived this long so that you could feed the yasha.

Your blood is delicious as usual. When I drink your blood, the pain doesn’t feel as bad.

[06:12]
Amazing… Give me more. Until the pain stops…

Drinking blood from your neck all the time isn’t enough, is it?

You want to feel my fangs in other places too, don’t you?

When I experience attacks like I did earlier, my body hurts all over. This place is particularly painful…

Can you understand? My heart feels as if it’s being stabbed by something. It might feel the same as fangs sinking into your body. Come on, let’s try it.

[07:07]
Does it hurt? I’m in pain too though. When I experience an attack, it hurts so much that I feel as if I might die at any moment. You saw what it was like, so you can share my pain, can’t you?

Your skin is covered in bright red blood. Does it hurt?

You’ve only just found out about my illness and now this is happening to you. How unfortunate…

Become even more unfortunate… I’ll give you a wound that makes it hurt every time you breathe.

Try and become more unfortunate than I am!

Your blood is delicious… It really is special. I can feel myself gaining strength.

[08:13]

Hey… If I drink all your blood, then my illness might be cured…

You see… Himiko’s blood is something special to the yasha. Don’t you think it’s worth trying?

Let’s try it.

That’s right. I’m sure I’ll get better if I drain you of your blood.

[09:06]
I was told that I wasn’t allowed to kill you, but I don’t actually care about that.

What happens after I die has nothing to do with me. If I can survive by killing you, then that’s what I’m going to do.

You’re here as a replacement for the other humans, aren’t you? Then become my replacement too. Die for my sake, won’t you?

[10:22]
Damn it…

I see… So the attacks don’t stop, even if I drink your blood? This illness can’t be cured…

I really am the unluckiest one of all.

Lucky you. It seems that there’s no need for you to die here. You want me to hurry up and die, don’t you?

Don’t be ridiculous. I’m definitely not going to die. I’m going to stubbornly keep on living.

Track 7

I’m not here.

I said I wasn’t here, didn’t I? Why did you come in?

Well… I’ll welcome you if you’ve come to sleep with me.

If that’s why you’re here, then could you go back out and knock again? I’ll pretend to be asleep until you make move on me.

Hmm? What’s that? Porridge?

You’re too kind. You can just leave me alone if I don’t come out of my room, can’t you? What good will looking after me do? Even though you want me to die…

Ah… I see. So a saintly person like you is taking pity on me, despite almost getting killed.

[01:07]
I’m so thankful I could cry!

I only coughed a little. Why are you looking at me like that?

If you think I should eat something, then wouldn’t your blood be the best thing? Even if I ate the porridge, all I’d be doing is making you feel better, wouldn’t I?

Well… I like normal food too, so I’ll eat it.

Hmm… It tastes quite good. It’s better than I thought it’d be.

[02:07]
Ah… My room is usually a mess because when those attacks happen, I take my pain out on the things around me. This room is the only one that’s in a terrible state, isn’t it?

But tidying it up would be a bother and I’m going to die soon anyway, so I don’t think there’s any point in doing it. I’m not the type of person who would clean up a place that they’re about to leave. I would have to say that I’m the type who would rather make a huge mess.

You want to tidy up? Even though it’ll become untidy right away?

Well… Why don’t you do whatever you want?

All those clothes have blood on them, so just throw them away. Make sure the others don’t find them.

[03:05]
It’s delicious…

Hmm?

Ah… That’s part of a clock. I don’t need it. Could you throw it away too?

You don’t need to fix it. I despise clocks. It’s as if they’re counting down the time that I’ve got left.

Tick tock. Tick tock. It hurts my ears.

Ah… By the way…

Did you know that there are plans to build a clock tower in the town?

The humans were getting excited because it’s the first good news that they’ve had in a while. When the clock tower is complete, the bell will ring everyday at noon.

I wonder how loud it will be. Do you think we’ll be able to hear it here at the Reimeikan?

[04:02]
If we could hear it, then I’d probably lose my patience and break the bell. I’d shoot the hands of the clock down and make the bell fall, so that it would never make a sound again. Then I’d set fire to it. I can see the disappointed faces of the townspeople.

Shut up! I know I shouldn’t do it. I don’t even know whether I’ll live to see the clock tower completed. Let me tell that kind of joke.

You thought I was serious? But I won’t actually be able to do it, so in the end, it’ll be nothing more than a joke. No matter how much I talk about the future, everything will turn out to be a joke. I won’t be able to make anything come true.

[05:11]
That’s right. It definitely can’t be cured. I don’t even know how I got that illness. I was looking at the documents in the library, thinking I’d find something there. The library has plenty of old books, so I thought there might be something about the illness yasha suffer from. Of course there was nothing at all.

Your blood didn’t help either. I’ve run out of options.

What? There’s no way that I’d ask the others. Have you forgotten that I didn’t want them to know? Make sure you don’t tell them.

[06:04]
Well… Some of them might have begun to notice though. But I’m going to pretend I know nothing about it until the very end.

Yasha are discriminated against by humans. Is it too much to ask that other yasha treat me as an equal?

Medicine? I’m not taking any.

The hospital? No thanks. I’d rather not go. Having other people fooling around with my body isn’t something I’m into. There’s no way that I’d go there! That place is dominated by death. I don’t want death forced upon me. That’s what hospitals are like, aren’t they?

Anyway, the illness that yasha suffer from can’t be cured by humans. I can tell that without trying.

[07:07]
Painkillers? Will you go and get them for me?

Hmm… I don’t really mind. Why though? Why would you do that much?

Are you taking pity on me because you know that I’m ill? Or are you just incredibly good-natured? Are you going to show me some of that insincere kindness?

That’s the reason? You should be kind to people when they’re unwell?

[08:03]
That’s the only reason you’re being kind to me?

I can’t understand that at all. What’s that supposed to mean?

Didn’t you notice? You called me a person just now. Not a yasha, but a person. Even though I almost killed you by drinking your blood. How interesting.

Track 8

Are you awake? I’m coming in.

Good morning. Have you already had breakfast?

I see. Then would you like to have some tea with your breakfast?

There’s some castella left over, so let’s eat it together.

You don’t have to be so cautious. Seeing as the weather is good today, I was just thinking that it would be nice to have some tea with you on the terrace. I’m telling the truth.

I’ll go ahead and get everything ready, so come and eat breakfast. I’ll be waiting for you.

Ah… So you came after all. Sit down here.

[01:01]
If you haven’t had breakfast yet, then castella on its own won’t be enough. I’ve brought some fruit from the kitchen, so just help yourself.

Here you go. Be careful, it’s hot.

Ah… If you’d like some sugar, here it is. Take as much as you like.

Is there anything else you want?

I see. Got it.

Let’s eat then.

I don’t really like the sun, but the blue sky and sunlight really suit you. I’m happy that I’ve been able to have someone as adorable as you all to myself.

[02:02]
Ah… Are you alright?

What’s the matter? You suddenly dropped your cup…

Did you spill any tea on yourself? Let me see.

Thank goodness. You seem to be fine.

Don’t scare me like that. It’d be terrible if you got burnt. You should take better care of yourself.

That look on your face… You don’t seem to be impressed.

You don’t like being treated this way?

Tch… Strange? That’s quite upsetting. I think I’m quite good at charming women though.

Ah… Or would you prefer me to be more forceful?

[03:05]
In that case…

I’m not going to let you escape. You belong completely to me. I’ll fill your mind with thoughts of me, so that you won’t even notice other men.

See… My voice, breath and warmth only belong to you. I want you to feel them even more.

This is enough to make you exhausted?

[04:01]
You’re so innocent. That’s what makes you adorable though.

Hmm? Oh? So you’re still calm enough to ask what I’m going to do next?

Ah… I wish you’d stayed delirious for a little longer.

Oh… Don’t go back to your room!

I went to the trouble of preparing this for you, so why don’t you love me?

Ah… I said it.

Hmm… Just as I said, I wanted you to love me.

Well, never mind. I suppose I’ll tell you everything. That might actually be more convincing to you.

Anyway, why don’t you sit down for now?

[05:05]
After talking to you yesterday, I thought that you might be able to love me. When I think about it carefully, I’m not actually that scared of dying. I’m more afraid of dying alone, surrounded by misfortune.

You’re painfully good-natured and can’t leave an unfortunate person alone, can you? That’s why I’m going to take as much advantage of that as I can. I’m counting on you to become the person who might stop me from dying alone.

So will you listen to a long tale from the past?

[06:07]
I’m going to reveal my past, so I want you to accept it completely. I want you to love me.

Track 9

I was born to parents who lived deep in the mountains, whilst fearing that they would be hunted down for being yasha. Living in fear of being seen by the villagers and rarely leaving the mountain was an uncomfortable existence.

One day, I ran away from home. I became a police officer so that I could fit into human society, instead of avoiding being seen by anyone else. I was quite happy when I obtained a gun licence after a great deal of effort. From then on, I was summoned to many different places as a well-known marksman.

[01:01]
I went all over Japan as a shooting instructor. When I felt the need to drink blood, I would find a human at random and drain them of their blood during the night. I was living quite comfortably. It was an enjoyable time. That was because I’d achieved a balance between living as a human and the urge to drink blood.

Well, I did feel as if I’d killed so many people that I’d drunk a little too much blood. I was hungry, so I couldn’t have avoided it, could I?

However… At some point, there was a gradual change in my health. I was tired and I felt a dull pain somewhere on my body. That’s all it was…

[02:01]
But yasha weren’t supposed to become ill, so I convinced myself that it was just my imagination or that I wasn’t getting enough sleep.

Not long after that, I experienced an attack during the Battle of Hakodate.

The sun is about to set. Are they still going to keep fighting?

It’s dark and difficult to see, so won’t the musket troops be allowed to retreat soon?

They’re running towards the Goryokaku, so we’ve practically won.

[03:03]
The blood that I coughed up made a dark brown stain at my feet.

My fellow soldiers who were close by stared at me in shock and worried that I’d been shot somewhere. I clutched at my painful chest and looked at my feet in a daze.

I was reminded of something that I’d heard from my parents. Yasha cannot suffer from any of the illnesses that humans do, but there are rare instances where they suffer from one illness. That is an illness which only yasha can suffer from and when they get that illness, there is no chance of recovery. The illness which yasha suffer from is an incurable one.

[04:08]
This can’t be happening… The sickness… Have I become infected with the sickness that only yasha can suffer from?

In other words, it was then that I realised I would always be a yasha, no matter how much I tried. Regardless of how hard I worked as a police officer, how skilled I was at handling a gun or how much I did for the battle between the new government army and the shogunate, I was meaningless. That’s because I am a yasha. It doesn’t matter what happens to the human world. What exactly have I been making all this effort for until now?

[05:05]
When I realised that, a laugh rose up from the depths of my stomach.

I see… So that’s how it is. I can’t become human, no matter what I do. That’s why I was destined to become infected with the sickness only yasha can suffer from and end up dying.

Right… Now I understand! In that case, there’s no reason for me to pretend to be human and make an effort on the battlefield, is there?!

[06:05]
What…? So everything I’ve done until now was meaningless?!

I’m done pretending to be friends with you humans! You should all just die!

I had a good time pretending to be your ally. But now you’re all done for! Goodbye!

You humans don’t have to fear oppression and you take peace for granted!

I’ve always hated you!

[07:07]
No matter how much I lied to myself, I couldn’t become human. Once I realised that, there were many things that didn’t matter anymore. From then on until the end of the war, I would drain humans of their blood if I felt like it, whether they were an enemy or an ally. Shortening my life on the battlefield was a ridiculous thing to do, so I became careless about the missions for the musket troop. When somebody would question me for that, I would keep them quiet by draining them of their blood. During that time, the war came to an end. At some point, the killings of my allies were seen as the work of our enemies. I was praised for being a hero who had survived everything and was awarded with a medal.

[08:01]
However, I didn’t feel happy at all. That’s why I decided to live the way I wanted from then on. I remember involving myself with both men and women, sleeping with them while I drank their blood. Day after day, I killed many humans by drinking their blood. The blood of each human has a different taste from the blood of the others, so I never tired of it. It became natural for me to drain someone of their blood, even when I didn’t have the desire to drink blood.

I became involved with the wife of a senior officer, something I had avoided doing before, for the sake of protecting myself. While we were undressed and affirming our love for each other, that senior officer walked in on us. I hadn’t begun to drink her blood yet, so he didn’t find out that I was a yasha, but he made a fuss about it being immoral and stripped me of my position as an officer.

[09:07]
I was almost exiled. But before that happened, I was rescued by Gento-san. Then I became indebted to the Reimeikan. The air is clear and there are old books in the library too.

Well… I didn’t have anywhere else to go, so I thought it was fine. Something like that. That was how the first half of my life was. Nothing good came of being born as a yasha. I wonder why I wasn’t born as a human.

What do you think? Was I able to take advantage of your kindness?

[10:01]
It doesn’t matter if you pity me. As long as you fall in love with me, then it was worth talking for such a long time.

Why would you say something like that?

The people I killed don’t matter, do they?

If you’ve got time to feel sorry for those silent corpses, then feel sorry for me, who’s right in front of you now!

That’s impossible. If I don’t cause misfortune for other people, then I’ll be the only unlucky one, won’t I? I hate things being that way!

I despise the humans who live such carefree lives. They only drive the yasha away instead of trying to understand them. I despise them for being able to walk through the town freely!

That’s why I’m going to drink as much blood as I can. I enjoying ending the lives of those humans who look so happy.

[11:06]
I can’t help laughing the moment those cheerful humans fall into despair. That’s because I’m able to feel as if I’m not as unlucky as they are at those times.

No matter what you think, I feel as if I’m the most unfortunate person in this world. All humans smile happily, don’t they? That’s why I won’t be satisfied until I make humans suffer misfortune. I want a human who is even more unfortunate than someone like me who writhes in agony because of the illness that will kill them one day.

[12:05]
If someone will shed tears thinking of the humans I’ve killed, then I might be able to feel happy, even if it’s only a little.

It’s impossible for me not to kill humans. Or are you going to take all my hate and anger? Enough for all the other humans!

In that case… Tell me that you love me. I’ve probably always wanted humans to love me.

[13:04]
I wanted someone who would accept me as a human and truly love me.

Hey… I want you to love me. Say that you love me.

You’re lying.

What do you think? Will you be able to love me if you make an effort? I can’t trust you at all.

Try and do it. If you want to protect the other humans, then try to love me.

Track 10

It hurts…

Hey. Wake up.

I’m going to drink some blood.

It’s alright. I think the pain won’t be so bad if I drink your blood.

Painkillers? Help me take them then. Use your mouth to pass them to me. Otherwise I won’t take them. I hate medicine.

[01:10]
Thank you.

It seems that you’ve become quite comfortable with me too. You’ll even kiss me if I insist that you do it… Is that the result of your effort to try and love me? I’m quite surprised that you’ve been coming to my room everyday since then. No one has ever stayed by my side for so long. I’m even surprised at myself for being happy about something like this. Sometimes it bothers me that you don’t entertain me at all though.

[02:13]
I’m feeling much better.

Hmm? Is that string the one I gave you before? You kept it?

Hey… You’re not going to show me cat’s cradle again, are you?

You don’t have to! It’s so boring I could die. If you show it to me now, the shock of boredom might actually kill me.

What? We’re going to do it together?

Why?

Fine… Just for a little while then.

Well… There’s nothing else to do anyway.

[03:09]
Alright. I’m going to take my fingers out.

Hmm… This really is incredibly boring. You could do something more seductive to comfort me.

Hey… We’ve been together everyday recently, but you don’t love me yet, do you?

What would make you fall in love with me? I’ve finally found a human who will stay with me, so I definitely don’t want to let go of them. I want to be loved by you. That would make me incredibly happy.

[04:09]
You quite like me? You’ve got a strange way of saying things as usual. So what do you “quite like” about me then?

Ah… That’s right. It was a bother, but I did make sure to take you to the town at that time. I thought that I would go home without you, but I did bring you back to the Reimeikan.

Hmm… Is that so? Did I say that the porridge was delicious? I don’t remember.

Ah… I’m playing cat’s cradle with you because I want to attract your attention, but I actually think it’s incredibly boring.

[05:06]
You think I’m kind in a lot of ways?

Hmm… So you’re happy when you find something kind about me. I see.

If you want me to be happy, then hurry up and love me. You’re the one who makes me happy.

I wonder about that… Even if you start feeling that way, I don’t think that it would have any connection to love. You see… In the end, you’re just feeling sorry for me, aren’t you? I thought that it would have been good if an opportunity came from you feeling so sorry for me that you couldn’t just leave me alone.

But can love really develop from feelings like those?

[06:12]
Maybe I’ve made a mistake. I’m terribly unlucky, aren’t I? I didn’t approach you in the right way, so you won’t love me.

Wait a minute! You can deny it if you want to, but we’re still in the middle of doing the cat’s cradle…

Ah! It broke. This is just like you and me. See. Even though it’s wrapped around both of our fingers, the red thread isn’t connected. It’s just tangled.

[07:07]
Even if you tie it back together, it won’t look right. The feelings that have grown between the two of us aren’t beautiful.

I don’t know… If I knew how to feel loved, then I wouldn’t be having a hard time.

Track 11

Where did you go? You weren’t here when I woke up. An attack started happening and it hurts…

You had a bath? I don’t care about that. Why did you go without saying anything? My body hurts all over and there’s a pain in my chest… You weren’t here when I thought I might die. Can you understand that feeling of despair?

[01:01]
You didn’t actually mean it when you said you’d stay with me and love me, did you?

I’m going to die alone after all. You won’t love me. I won’t become happy at all.

What good will apologising do? I’ve had enough. I don’t need you.

Shut up! Resting won’t help me get better. Leave me alone.

[02:04]
Why are you following me?

That’s right. I’m going to the town. I’m going to choose a random house and drain as many people of their blood as I can. If I’m going to die, then I’ll die after I send as many happy people as possible to the depths of despair.

See. I’ve brought my gun too. If you follow me, then I’ll let you see a joyful and bloody festival.

Could you let go of me?

I’m not going to stop.

It doesn’t matter anymore! Let go of me!

[03:03]
You should at least understand that this is meaningless! I no longer have any attachment to living as a yasha!

That’s why I want causing humans misfortune to be the last thing I do! It doesn’t matter if I release this anger I can’t help feeling at the very end, does it?!

If you really want to stop me… Then die with me. If I’m going to end up dying alone at some point, then I’d rather die with someone else right now. Are you going to make that happen?

That’s right. Of course it’s impossible. But now I’ve realised. The only time I can be sure that you love me is when you die with me.

[04:11]
That’ll be the first time that I’ll realise you love me and that I can be happy. You want to love me, don’t you? You want to save me from my life of misfortune, don’t you?

In that case… Show me your neck. Then let me drain all your blood now. If you can’t do that, then just go back to the house and tremble!

I’ll be caught after killing several people and then I’ll be cruelly executed. There’s no need for you to feel responsible for that.

See you later. Goodbye.

[05:11]
What is it? Do you still want something from me?

Are you joking? It’s not funny at all though.

You’re serious about doing it? You’re offering me your neck because you don’t mind if I drain all your blood?

Let me tell you something… I’ve been serious all along. If you’re offering me your neck, then I’m going to drain all your blood.

You’re such an idiot.

[06:02]
I’m not going to hold back.

Breathe out and breathe in. Then breathe out again.

It doesn’t hurt, does it? I’m going to let you die a pleasurable death.

Hold onto me.

[07:03]
It’s not enough. You won’t die yet.

Can you tell that I’m reaching into a deeper place than I would if we slept together?

It feels good, doesn’t it?

You said you’d die with me… You really are adorably good-natured.

I’ll be incredibly happy if you died in my arms.

Are you crying?

[08:01]
I’m going to take your tears, your blood and the warmth of your body. You can cry as much as you like.

Are you still feeling sorry for me?

Well… I can’t help it. I won’t believe that you love me unless I do this.

If you’re saying that you won’t hate me, even if I kill you, then perhaps that’s love?

[09:06]
Hey… How do you feel? Are you going to end up hating me?

I see… I’m happy.

I feel relieved when I see your face gradually turning pale. You really are going to die for me.

Hey… Tell me you love me. Say “I love you”…

Don’t just say that you might.

[10:08]
I see… Even though you might be lying because you’re still alive…

I wonder why… I’m happy…

I’ve drunk quite a lot.

Hey… Can you still see?

[11:05]
Look… When I hold your hand, the blood drips onto my fingers too… It’s just like a thread.

No matter how much I drink, it still keeps flowing. It’s like an incredibly strong red thread.

Your love will soon be mine.

How strange… The pain in my chest feels different from usual.

[12:12]
When I consider that you’re about to die, I only feel pain on the left side of my chest. Is this love?

Hey… I’ve always felt unlucky to have been born as a yasha, but if you love me, then I might feel differently about it. I wouldn’t have met you if I hadn’t been born as a yasha.

[13:14]
Perhaps the world is fairer than I thought it was. It’s thanks to you that, for a moment, I was able to feel that being born as a yasha wasn’t such a bad thing.

Can you still hear?

[14:02]
Perhaps you don’t feel good any longer. You don’t feel anything.

I’ll follow you soon enough. You’re incredibly dear to me right now.

I love you.

Track 12

It’s alright. My body is quite tough.

Wait… I haven’t had enough yet.

I’m not talking about the painkillers. I mean the kisses.

[01:01]
Oh…

Ah… You’re feeling anaemic again? Now it’s normal for you not to have enough blood.

It’s alright. Go to sleep.

Shouldn’t you say something before you go to sleep?

Yes. I love you too.

In the end, I stopped killing you at the last minute. There’s no doubt that your love is true. That’s because the feeling that you are dear to me is also true.

[02:07]
In that case, I feel as if spending the short amount of time I’ve got left together with you wouldn’t be so bad. All the time I’ve got left is yours. You understand that, don’t you?

I gently touched your pale cheeks as you slept deeply. Even the cold sensation that the flame of your life could fade away at any moment is dear to me.

Hey… Let’s die together next time.

When I’m coughing up blood and about to die, you’ll die with me, won’t you?

[03:05]
Not even death will separate us. That’s something to be happy about, isn’t it?

Thick crimson blood seeped from the bite marks all over your body. Recently, I’ve been feeling thirsty as soon as I wake up, so your wounds don’t even have time to heal. However… You smile gently as you let me take as much blood as I like.

When you smile at me that way… When you embrace me gently… You become even more dear to me. I can’t stop whispering to you that I love you.

I love you.

[04:17]
Come to think of it… What happened to the clock tower? Have they started building it?

Hey… Do you think we’ll survive until the bell in the clock tower rings? I was sure it was impossible, but I’m still alive. It might be more likely than you think.

Don’t you think it would be nice to die while listening to the sound of the bell ring?

[05:05]
Yes… It’s incredibly romantic.

As long as we have time left, why don’t we think about how we would like to die?

I’ll do my best to fulfil your wishes.

So… It sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

I’m feeling sleepy too. Why don’t we go to sleep together?

Ah… I’m so happy. Thank you.

I love you.
