Shinsengumi Kekkonroku Wasurenagusa 6

Shinsengumi Kekkonroku Wasurenagusa 6 – Nagakura Shinpachi

CV: Maeno Tomoaki

Track 1

It was the first year of the Genji era [1]. I protected the city of Kyoto as the captain of the Shinsengumi’s second troop. I joined the Shinsengumi because of my absolute confidence in my sword fighting skills. You could say that sword fighting is what makes me who I am. That’s how important it is to me.

[00:43]
If all I needed to do was earn enough to eat, then I could have just become an instructor at any dojo. Unfortunately, I don’t like being bored. That’s why I joined the Roshigumi [2], which later became the Shinsengumi. Once you’ve picked up a sword in this violent era, you’ll be faced with life and death at the same time.

In one sense, sword fighting is the same as overthrowing the shogunate. The urgent feeling of not knowing when I might die became my reason for living. I picked up a sword because I wanted to know what living feels like.

[01:33]
Despite my expectations, all my opponents were nothing special. I became tired of their empty and superficial stances when I went out to battle. Considering their skills, I was surprised they had chosen to fight.

It was the same at the Ikedaya [3]. Even though they had great ideals, the Joui [4] didn’t have the intelligence to uphold those ideals. I fought off those fools single-handedly. However, when I heard Heisuke’s voice from behind me, I let my guard down for a moment. The Joui men took that opportunity to throw themselves at me, brandishing their swords.

[02:28]
That was a big mistake. I looked at my hand, all covered in blood and wondered whether my blood really was being shed for the sake of the Shinsengumi. To be honest, unlike the soldiers who were working hard everyday, it wasn’t as if I was attached to the Shinsengumi; but because I had my friends like Heisuke and Sano there, I stayed out of habit. If there is somewhere else where I can be even more true to myself, then I probably won’t hesitate to go there instead. That’s right. If I find a better reason to fight and put my life in danger…

[03:35]
What’s the meaning of this bandage? I think you overdid it, Zaki-san… I can’t go to the red-light district like this…

Hmm? Ah! That was close.

Can’t you look where you’re going?! Look at this huge bandage wrapped around my little finger! I know I’m well-built, but that doesn’t change the fact that you…

Oh? A woman?

Huh. You’re small, so I thought you were Heisuke. Well, I suppose Heisuke is a little bigger than you.

Hey, what is a woman doing at the headquarters?

Hmm… Ah, are you the woman Hajime found?

[04:30]
Oh, you’re quite a short woman. A beautiful woman would’ve been better.

No, it was nothing.

My hand? It happened at the Ikedaya. I don’t get hurt like this normally, but I let my guard down for a moment. But don’t you think this is too much, considering all I got was a little cut on my finger?

I don’t know whether to say Zaki-san is too disorganised or too proper about treating people.

Ah, I can’t move my hand or make women happy like this.

Hmm? Do you understand the meaning of what I just said?

It means that I can’t touch women somewhere good.

[05:37]
Hahaha! Your face is bright red. I was sure you’d be an innocent girl.

I’m right, aren’t I?

I thought so. You look as if you don’t know anything about men.

Well, there’s no need to worry. I’m not interested in plain women like you.

You should look straight ahead and pay attention while you’re walking around the headquarters.

Be careful now.

[1] Genji era – An era which began on February 1, 1864.
[2] Roshigumi – A group of masterless samurai who were protectors of the shogunate. Many Shinsengumi members had also been part of the Roshigumi.
[3] Ikedaya Affair – An armed encounter between masterless samurai employed by the Choshu and Tosa clans and the Shinsengumi.
[4] Joui – Refers to “Sonno Joui” who supported revering the emperor and expelling foreigners.

Track 2

Hmm? Oh? You’re cleaning up the garden?

So you ended up becoming the Shinsengumi’s maid. It’s useful to have someone who can do the chores in a place full of men. I’m glad to have you here!

Anyway, let me introduce myself. I’m Nagakura Shinpachi, the captain of the second troop. I’m also a sword fighting instructor here. I think I’m the most skilled swordsman here, if I may say so myself.

[00:49]
I heard you had a bit of trouble becoming a maid here, didn’t you? I’m impressed you got Kondo-san to agree. Well, your parents owned a restaurant, so I guess that’s how you made things work.

Now that you’ve been acknowledged as a maid, I’m expecting some good food from you! All the food men cook is so unrefined. It’s much better for women to cook.

Aren’t you working too hard, even though you’ve only just started though? Have you gotten some rest?

Working helps you forget about bad things? Are you talking about your parents getting killed? I heard about it from Kondo-san and the others. It seems like you had a hard time.

[01:58]
It’s only natural that you wouldn’t want to remember what happened. Well, the headquarters is a big place. There’s plenty you can clean. Someday you won’t even have time to remember. You dried all that laundry too, didn’t you?

Was it difficult? This won’t help motivate you, but we get the same amount of laundry everyday. I think it’ll be pretty tough. But now that you’ve decided to become a maid, just do your best.

Right! If you take a break and want someone to talk to, then I can help you out with that. You probably don’t know much, so I’ll teach you a few things.

[02:54]
Ah, alright. What do you want to know?

About men’s bodies? How to make a move on the man you like? Shall I teach you everything about those? How about you experience them for yourself?

I’m glad you reacted just the way I thought you would. It’s unusual to see a woman who is as much fun to tease as you are. It seems like you lived a sheltered life.

Ah! Oh… You had the leaves all swept up, but now they’ve blown everywhere. I guess I’ll have to help you. It’s my fault for keeping you talking anyway.

[03:54]
Huh? I don’t need to help?

Hey, you. I think it’s okay to depend on someone else at times like this.

You don’t need my help? I see. You’re a pretty serious person. But it’s hard for one person to clean the garden alone. I’ll help you if I have time, so tell me if things get too difficult.

It’s fine if you understand that.

Huh? I’m kind? Me?

Yes, you’re right. I believe in being kind to women. It’d make things better for me later on, wouldn’t it?

[04:49]
Even I dream of settling down happily with the woman I love. So I have to do all I can to find that woman. Luckily for me, because of my looks, it only takes a little kindness for me to win a woman’s heart. The more women who fall in love with me, the more I’ve got to choose from. I’ve never met a woman who has loved me for who I am though.

Ah, it was nothing. I suppose I’ve been talking for a little too long. Oh, well.

[05:39]
Hey. You’re cleaning up, right? How about you get on with it?

You’re moving around so slowly! You’re like a little bird.

Well, do your best with your work, Little Bird.

Track 3

That’s not right! Bend your knees more!

Because the lower half of your body isn’t steady, you lose balance after swinging your sword.

Good! That’s it!

The strength comes from your back as well, not just your arms. Swing the sword with your whole body!

Good! You pass! Don’t forget that stance.

Hmm?

Alright! Let’s have a break soon! Go and get some water to drink.

[00:48]
What are you doing here? Just watching?

I don’t think watching people learn how to fight with a sword is that interesting though.

Ah. Or were you fascinated by how bold I looked while teaching?

Oh. You agree!

I was only teasing you just now. This is probably your first time seeing someone training. I suppose sword fighting is something the daughter of restaurant owners would never encounter. What you saw just then probably seemed quite impressive, but it would be completely different if someone were holding a real sword. You’d need even more strength. You’d probably be trying your hardest just to keep hold of a sword with your thin arms. Would you like to try holding a sword?

[01:58]
You shouldn’t really hold a real sword, but you seem to be interested. Don’t tell anyone else about this.

Here you go, take it.

Hey! Ah! That’s a dangerous way of holding it.

That’s not right. This is how you hold a sword.

Listen up. You hold the hilt a little loosely with both hands. People tend to put too much strength into their index and middle finger, but on both hands, you should put your strength into your little finger and ring finger. If not, you won’t be able to move your wrist freely. Even that is enough to change the speed of your swing completely.

Haha! Is it heavy? It’s alright. I’ll support you from behind, so you won’t fall, even if you do make a mistake.

[02:58]
A real sword is heavier than you think. When you point the tip towards someone, the weight doubles. That’s because you’re carrying the weight of the determination to kill another person and the life of your opponent, you see. You lift up that weight, aim at the enemy in front of you and then cut.

I only swung my sword into the air just now, but the moment a sword pierces someone’s body, it becomes even heavier. Even so, you can’t stop halfway through. Until your sword goes right through your opponent’s body, you mustn’t lose against that heavy weight. Otherwise, that one moment of distraction…

[03:58]
Are you trembling? You can let go.

Were you reminded of what happened that day?

You’re right. I’m sorry. That was insensitive of me. I’m used to fighting battles, so you and I are different. And you’re…

Look this way, Little Bird.

It’s a spell to make you forget about bad things.

[04:54]
Little Bird?

You’re all tense! It seems like the spell worked.

Was that the first time you’ve been kissed? It seems like it was.

Ah, the other soldiers are back. You should get back to work soon too. See you later.

[05:30]
Alright! Let’s start training again!

Get into pairs and put on your armour!

Let your opponent hit you on purpose and see what your stance is like.

At the same time, abandon your fear!

Track 4

Damn it!

Hmm?

Ah. It’s you, Little Bird. You’re still awake?

Are you used to the headquarters now? I suppose it’s natural that you would be. It’s been quite a while since you came here.

Even so, it’s no good for you to be wandering around the corridors at night, is it? There are many men with strong desires here. Wouldn’t it be better for you to stay in your room as much as possible, if you don’t want to get attacked?

Hmm? The smell of alcohol?

Ah, I suppose it’s because I went out drinking.

[01:15]
Who did I go with? That doesn’t really matter, does it?

Why are you looking at me like that? Would you hate it if it had been a woman?

Well, no matter what you say, I can do what I like.

Tch. I feel sick. Maybe I had too much to drink.

Hey, can you bring some water to my room? I’ll be waiting there.

Right, I’ll leave it to you.

[02:18]
Come in.

Thanks.

Why do you look so worried? I don’t want someone to look at me like that just because I had a little too much to drink.

Huh? I’m not depressed. It’s got nothing to do with you, has it?

Tch!

Hey. Why didn’t you leave this room immediately? Are you thinking of comforting me or something?

A girl who’s been raised well can’t just watch someone in pain.

[03:21]
Hmm… In that case…

I want you to comfort me. These headquarters are full of men. You were prepared for this kind of thing when you became a maid, weren’t you?

I told you earlier, didn’t I? There are lots of men here with a great desire to touch a woman. I’m just like them. I want to hold a woman’s body at this very moment.

Don’t try to resist.

[04:25]
I’m acting strangely? Strangely, hmm?

Little Bird. Aren’t you misunderstanding something about me?

You think I’m a kind person who wouldn’t do something like this?

You fool. You’re too oblivious to what men are like.

Didn’t I tell you this? I’m the type of man who has relationships with many women. You’re not the only woman I’ve been kind to.

What is it? You thought that I liked you?

[05:22]
How stupid.

Shouldn’t you have realised that I was going to do this when I got you to bring water to my room?

Ah. Or were you expecting something?

I can tell by looking at your face.

You’re thinking of going along with this.

Hey. Do you love me?

At the very least, you’re beginning to. In that case, I want you to calm these feelings I’m having. That’s the job of a good maid, isn’t it?

[06:27]
If you want to make me yours, then pleasure me with your own hands.

Shh. If the other men catch you doing this with me, then they might do the same too.

Touch me.

You don’t have to be forceful.

[07:26]
Just like that…

How indecent. My body is getting warmer from this and I think I’m going to go crazy.

I want you to desire me too. Come on, do as I say.

Useless. Don’t do it so thoughtlessly.

Do it gently like this. Come on, keep going.

Good. Just like that. A little more…

[08:36]
I’m sorry.

You’re an idiot, aren’t you? You should have shouted loudly and run away. You knew that you wouldn’t be the one in trouble if you called someone, didn’t you?

Here’s your kimono.

I’m not feeling drunk anymore.

Yes, that’s enough.

You can go back to your room now. Hurry up and go before the other men get suspicious.

[09:25]
Ah, wait!

One last thing…

That’s to thank you for having fun with me.

Why? Hmm… I wonder why?

Goodnight then.

Tch. What am I doing?

Track 5

Ah. Wait, Little Bird!

What have you got that expression on your face for? You’re on your way back to your room after finishing work, right?

Come here.

Come on, sit next to me. The wind feels good today. Let’s talk here for a little while.

Spring has come all of a sudden.

[01:01]
Cherry blossoms will probably bloom around here soon.

Why are you so quiet? Are you scared of me because of what happened the other day?

Huh? That’s not it?

I look lonely?

Haha. You say some interesting things, Little Bird. Are you saying that I look different from usual? How can you say that?

Ah. So you’ve been watching me that often then.

Oh… I suppose I don’t need to make that kind of joke.

[02:05]
Jeez, I wonder why you realised.

Whenever spring comes around, I go and see the cherry blossoms with my friends. With Heisuke and Sano, I mean. Rather than looking at the cherry blossoms, it’s more like a drinking competition. I look forward to it every year.

Ah. Despite how he looks, Sano is a weak drinker. It’s strange, isn’t it?

Sano is the first one to get drunk, followed by Heisuke. All we do is drink together until we can’t walk straight and talk about stupid things, but I honestly enjoy those times.

[03:08]
However, I don’t think we’ll be able to do it from this year onwards. There’s nothing we can do about it, but it’s still kind of unfortunate.

The headquarters are quiet now. I suppose it’s because Heisuke and the other noisy men are no longer here.

You heard about most of what happened, didn’t you? Some of the men left the Shinsengumi to join the Goryou Eji [1]. From now on, we probably won’t see them like we used to.

[04:01]
On that night where I treated you a little roughly… Heisuke told me he was leaving the headquarters. He made the decision to leave the Shinsengumi, without speaking to anyone else.

I had realised that Heisuke didn’t trust the Shinsengumi. But I felt comfortable being with him and Sano. I always pretended not to notice his feelings.

I couldn’t accept becoming his enemy, so I got angry and started drinking. But I didn’t end up getting drunk in the end. I’m sorry I got rough and started doing those things to you.

[05:10]
It’s embarrassing for a grown man to say this, but I think I was a little lonely. You noticed I felt that way without me even realising it. This really is shameful.

It’s quite painful to feel lonely. Come to think of it, I haven’t really experienced that feeling before. Have you been able to accept what happened to your parents?

I see. You’re right.

[06:05]
Alright! Let’s go eat something sweet to take our minds off things! You haven’t eaten any sweets since coming here, have you? I’ll take you out!

Your eyes look so bright! A sweet shop called Banrakuya opened recently. I often see it when I’m out on patrol and there’s always a long line in front. Apparently their bean paste wafers are quite good. Let’s go there!

Come on. Now that’s been decided, let’s hurry!

[07:13]
Ah! There’s a long line. Business is good as usual. If there’s such a big crowd, then what they sell must be pretty tasty. Come on, let’s join the line.

The customers really are all women and kids.

No, I’m fine. I can put up with it.

Ah…

No. We’re not going to a different shop. There’s a reason for eating the bean paste wafers here.

Don’t be so concerned about it. It’s fine! I want to eat the bean paste wafers from here, no matter what!

[08:09]
Ah… Don’t laugh! Is there something wrong with a man liking sweets?

Damn it. I said too much.

Hmm? Come to think of it, isn’t this the first time you’ve smiled since coming to the headquarters?

Haha. You always had a frightened look on your face, but you can look happy too. You look pretty cute when you smile.

Ah! The line started moving. I can see the sign. What flavour do you want?

I’ll have… Hmm… I’ll have the chestnut flavour one. But the azuki [2] flavour looks good too.

[09:06]
Ah. You’re going to have azuki? We’ll each share a piece of ours with each other then.

It’s alright, isn’t it? We’re already close enough to have kissed, you see.

Shall we hold hands then? I don’t mind doing it.

Okay, okay. I won’t tease you anymore. You’ve already seen me at my most pathetic. I don’t need to act like a ladies’ man in front of you anymore.

You found out that I like sweets too. Oh, well.

[10:12]
Hey, how about we eat here? The weather is good and it’s alright to eat outside sometimes, isn’t it?

Here’s the azuki one.

It’s good! It’s no surprise that people are lining up there everyday.

Will you try it too? Come on, open your mouth.

What do you think? Is it good?

It certainly is!

[11:04]
Ah, there’s a crumb on your mouth.

Not there. Here.

Got it.

I’m not teasing you. Didn’t I just say I’d stop teasing you?

It’s strange. When I see you smiling, it makes me want to do things like this. I wonder why.

Ah. I remember I passed by here once when I snuck out of practice with Heisuke and Sano.

[12:05]
We’ve known each other since we were at the Shieikan [3]. Even when we became members of the Shinsengumi, we would often have fun together. I was sure the three of us would be together forever. Of course, somewhere in my heart, I understood that wouldn’t be the case, as long as we were in the Shinsengumi.

It’s difficult to think that I might end up fighting with Heisuke. But he was prepared for that when he left the troop. I think that took quite a lot of courage.

[13:01]
A long time ago, Heisuke said that if he were to die, he would want me or Sano to be the one who killed him. If that’s what Heisuke wants, then I’ll do it. If someone else is going to end up taking his life, then I want to be the one who carries the burden of his life. But of course, I want to avoid that happening. So I made him promise that we’d all live a long time.

I’m only fond of the members of the Shinsengumi, I don’t actually depend on the Shinsengumi itself. So if I find somewhere else I can be myself, then I’ll have to make up my mind, like Heisuke did.

[14:13]
What about you? Will you stay with the Shinsengumi forever?

Tell me if you find somewhere else, alright? I can give you some advice.

This world is a dangerous place. Just by leaving this place, you could be considered a spy from somewhere. I’ll tell Kondo-san and the others you aren’t that type of person. So tell me if that happens. I think I’ll be able to help a little.

[15:02]
Also… I hate that the people around me are suddenly disappearing.

Ah. I’m sorry. I ended up talking about some strange things.

Haha. I wonder why I say unnecessary things when I’m with you.

The bean paste wafers were good, weren’t they? I’m glad I got to eat them with you.

Come on, let’s go back to the headquarters before it gets dark.

Give me your hand.

[16:03]
Let’s go back like this until we reach the headquarters.

Now that I think about it, this is my first time walking with someone so small. It feels strangely good. Maybe it’s because I’ve seen your smile.

[1] Goryou Eji – A group created by Itou Kashitaro after he and his allies separated from the Shinsengumi.
[2] Azuki – A bean used to make the red bean paste filling in Japanese sweets such as anpan and manju.
[3] Shieikan – A dojo in Tokyo, where several of the major Shinsengumi members met one another.

Track 6

Ah! It’s you. We almost bumped into each other.

I was just in a bit of a hurry. Sorry.

You want to know what’s wrong? Well…

Come with me. I’ve got something to tell you.

[00:54]
Hajime had gone with Heisuke to the Goryou Eji, but he has just returned to the headquarters. It seems that they’re planning to assassinate Kondo-san. We will soon fight with the Goryou Eji. Of course, Sano and I will be taking part too.

The time that I had been worried about is already here.

Ah. But you don’t have to worry. You won’t be in danger if you stay at the headquarters. And no matter what happens, Hijikata-san has ordered us to save Heisuke. I’m certain that he won’t be killed.

[01:54]
It’s alright. I’m going to protect Heisuke. Don’t worry.

I’m going to get ready for battle now. The other men will be busy too, but you can just wait here. Got it?

Alright. It’s a promise.

Hmm? What’s the matter? Why are you coughing? Have you got a cold?

It’s pretty chilly around this time. A woman shouldn’t let her body get cold. Keep yourself warm and go to sleep. I’m going to where Kondo-san and the others are. See you later.

Track 7

It was an unforgettable day. November 18th, in the third year of the Keio era [1]. That day, amongst the Shinsengumi, there was a nervous feeling we had never experienced before. In order to put a stop to the Goryou Eji’s plan, we tricked Itou-san and assassinated him when he let his guard down. We left his body at the gate of Honkoji in Aburanokoji [2] and sent a message to Gesshinin [3], where the Goryou Eji were.

It was only because of my selfishness that I prayed Heisuke wouldn’t come to this battlefield, but that wish was for nothing and Heisuke appeared anyway.

[00:58]
When they put Itou-san in a palanquin and lifted it up, that was our signal. Heading towards the Goryou Eji, who had their hands full, we wielded our swords. Out of the corner of my eye, I looked for where Heisuke was. He was little way away from me.

Damn it!

I was blocked from getting near him by the fighting happening in front of me. I needed to hurry and take him somewhere so he didn’t get injured in the clash of swords, but I couldn’t move forward as I wished.

You bastard! You’re in my way!

[01:57]
Heisuke! Hey, Heisuke! Get away from here now!

Ah! Watch out, Heisuke!

Heisuke!

Hmm? Oh, it’s you, Little Bird.

Yeah. I just spaced out for a while.

[02:50]
It seems that the order to spare Heisuke didn’t reach everyone in the troop. He was wounded by someone who wasn’t aware of the situation.

I couldn’t keep the promise I made with Heisuke. Even though he was relying on me so much. Why am I…

How can I call myself a warrior when I couldn’t even keep an important promise? How can I call myself his brother? Heisuke must be disappointed with me.

[03:53]
What was I doing there?

I wasn’t able to see whether he was alive or not. But I’m sure that injury…

I was quite confident about my sword fighting skills. To the extent that I thought there was no one stronger than me. But I’ve realised that confidence was meaningless. I haven’t become the kind of warrior I admired when I was a child.

[04:52]
My arms are no use to me. I couldn’t even protect someone important to me. My arms…

Look away.

Let go! It doesn’t matter at all! I don’t need these useless arms!

Hey! Just let go!

You idiot! What if you’d gotten hurt?!

Is it normal to be so determined?

[05:50]
Hey. Why are you crying?

Ah, your cute face is ruined.

I’m sorry I tried to do something strange.

Come on, it’s alright now. Why are you crying? You don’t have to worry about me, do you?

Because you love me?

I see.

You idiot. You’re being tricked. You only have that impression because I was the first man to kiss you. There’s no way you could love a weak man like me.

[06:58]
I’m not weak? But I couldn’t protect anyone…

What? I protected you?

I don’t remember doing anything to protect you.

I always stayed by your side when you were sad?

Ah, when you’d just come to the headquarters? That’s because I can’t ignore a woman when she’s alone with a sad look on her face. I told you that I’d made up my mind to treat women kindly, didn’t I? That’s all it was.

[07:58]
No… I suppose it’s more than that. I usually avoid troublesome things. Maybe I just wanted to take care of you because it was you. Now that I think about it, you were always by my side when I was lonely too, weren’t you?

Hey. Do you really love me?

In that case… You can be the one to kiss me.

Come on.

[08:57]
Your face is bright red. It’s obvious that you’re trying too hard.

Anyway, you’re not even tall enough on tiptoes to reach my lips, are you?

Thank you though.

Can you still love someone worthless like me?

I see.

You’re strange, aren’t you?

[09:50]
Stay still. Let me be the one to kiss you after all.

My arms? It’s alright now. I don’t feel like cutting them off anymore.

Eh? You’re sure Heisuke is alive?

You’re right. He was full of life at the Ikedaya Affair. He wouldn’t die so easily, would he?

[10:50]
I won’t let you experience any more pain. Just like you did for me, I’ll definitely be by your side whenever you’re hurt.

Someone will see us? Yes. You’re right.

Too bad. We’ll continue this another time.

[11:35]
It’s gotten quite cold, hasn’t it? Didn’t you catch a cold? Go inside now. Have some hot tea and get some rest.

Hmm? What’s the matter? Go inside quickly.

Hey! What’s the matter? Hey! Hey!

[1] Keio era – An era which began during April 1865.
[2] Aburanokoji – The incident where Itou Kashitaro was killed is named after this street where it occurred.
[3] Gesshinin – A temple that was founded during 1617 and is located next to the more well known Kodaiji Temple.

Track 8

Hey! How is she doing?

Is it a cold after all? Maybe she’s been pushing herself too hard recently. It seems like she’s taking a long time to recover from her cold.

It’s not a cold? Then what is it?

A different illness?

Huh? What’s that mean?

Well… She’ll get better soon though, right? Tell me if there’s anything I can do. I can look after her.

[00:54]
No… She won’t get better? What are you talking about?

Hey! What are you talking about? She won’t get better… In other words…

Wait! Hey!

It can’t be… It’s just not right…

I’m coming in, Little Bird.

[01:54]
Ah. You look well. How are you feeling?

Eh?

Ah. It was a just cold after all.

Jeez! You were probably cleaning the garden in the cold again, weren’t you?

Well, you’ll get better if you rest, so just keep doing that for a while. You’ll take a few days’ break from working as a maid too. When you hadn’t started working here yet, the men took turns doing the laundry and cooking. It’ll be fine for a little while.

Ah. Your cough is quite bad.

It’s okay. I’ll take care of you.

[02:50]
I have missions to deal with though. Now I’m going out on patrol again. I’ll stay with you all the time when I get back. Be good and wait for me. Alright?

Yes. That’s good!

Eh? I’m going to catch your cold? I don’t care about that!

If I’ve got time, on my way home, I’ll buy the bean paste wafers we had the other day. So don’t even think about sneaking out of bed to do some work. Got it?

Alright. See you later.

[04:10]
Damn it!

That day, I became sure that neither God nor Buddha existed in this world. If the fear of losing her had come to me suddenly, then my decision to protect her was also sudden. I suppose that’s how you can start to love someone. In that case, it’s taken me quite a long time to get to this point. If only I had noticed you sooner.

[05:07]
Hey, Little Bird. Why am I such a fool? If only I could go back to that moment, with the same feelings I have now. If I could, then perhaps I could have kept you living in a cage until the very end.

Track 9

Hey! What are you doing out of bed? You’re not better yet, so you have to rest, don’t you? Come on, get back in bed.

Right… From tomorrow, I’ll be leaving the headquarters for a little while. I’m going to fight in Toba [1]. Some time ago, Yoshinobu-kou [2] brought about the restoration of imperial rule, and control went over to the imperial side, didn’t it? Recently, the decree for the restoration of imperial rule was sent out too, wasn’t it? But it seems that the Choshu and Satsuma [3] won’t be satisfied unless the shogunate is overthrown.

[01:02]
So we Shinsengumi are going to follow Yoshinobu-kou to Osaka.

It’s alright, there’ll be 150 men going. We won’t lose that easily. Anyway, I told you this before, didn’t I? I’m confident that I won’t lose to anyone when it comes to sword fighting. I’m definitely going to return home alive.

Why do you look so worried? Could it be that you don’t believe me?

[01:59]
There’s no way I’d leave you behind and die somewhere else, is there? You should concentrate on getting better before I’m back. I’ll bring you a gift and I’ll tell you all the interesting stories from my time in Osaka. So make sure you get well and wait for me. Got it?

Alright, that’s a promise!

Okay, let’s make it a pinky promise.

Alright. Get some rest now. I’ll stay by your side until you fall asleep.

Goodnight, Little Bird.

[03:25]
And so, we Shinsengumi made our way towards Toba. Unlike our expectations, the battle did not go as planned and many of the Shinsengumi were killed. As I brought down my sword, I suddenly questioned the reason I was staying with the Shinsengumi.

Eventually, in accordance with Hijikata-san’s orders, we hurried to Osaka Castle. But the commander Yoshinobu-kou was not there. He had already escaped to Edo. We had no choice but to follow him to Edo, but during the journey, the Shinsengumi became greatly divided.

[04:25]
At that time, two months had already passed since I left the headquarters. When I hold onto my sword, your face comes to mind. I wonder how I can make you happy?

Hey, you probably know about your illness by now, don’t you? You know that I lied to you, don’t you?

The battle at Edo ended in complete defeat too. I did the best that I could. I don’t have any regrets about the troop.

[05:18]
I’m going to protect you. I’m going to find my own place too. I wonder if you’ll be angry at me for doing something selfish. But this is all I can do now.

Little Bird!

I’m home.

Sorry I’m late. The battle took longer than I thought it would.

[06:24]
I’m glad that you’re well.

I’m exaggerating? Of course I’m not. I’ve been worried all this time.

Yes, we lost the battle. Hijikata-san, Kondo-san and the others won’t be coming back to the headquarters yet. I’ve got to go again soon too.

Hey, I’ve got something important to tell you. Will you listen?

I’ve decided to leave the Shinsengumi. I’m going to create the Seiheitai [4] with Sano. We plan on heading to Aizu and continuing the battle separately from the Shinsengumi.

[07:20]
But I think we’ll be staying in Edo for some time, then gradually heading towards Aizu.

So… If you don’t have a reason to stay here, then I’d like you to come with me. I think I’ll be able to win any battle if you’re with me. I definitely won’t put you in danger. I promise. So… What do you think?

[08:12]
I see. I’m glad. You’re still feeling unwell, aren’t you? I’ll do all the chores until you feel better, so you concentrate on getting better.

You dummy. Why are you crying? I didn’t mean to make you cry.

You’re happy? I see.

I’m going to protect you, Little Bird. So I want you to let me stay by your side.

[09:09]
I’m going to try my best. I’m going to try my best so that you can keep smiling.

We’re going to leave soon. I’d like to leave tomorrow, if possible.

Ah, don’t worry about your health. I’ll think of an easy way to get there. Pack up your things, alright? Make sure you have a proper rest too. Okay?

You look so happy.

Right, you haven’t been outside much lately.

[10:00]
Ah, shall we go for a walk once we get to Aizu? Depending on where we’re staying, I might be able to show you the sea too.

You haven’t seen the sea, have you? Let’s look at it together.

I’m going to pack up my things too. See you later.

[1] Toba – An area which was an important port between Osaka and Edo (Tokyo) during the Meiji era (1603-1868).
[2] Yoshinobu-kou – The last shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. He unsuccessfully tried to reform the shogunate.
[3] Choshu and Satsuma – Two powerful clans which were attempting to overthrow the shogunate.
[4] Seiheitai – A unit formed by Sanosuke, Shinpachi and a group of former shogunate retainers to fight against the Imperial Army. They were also known as the “Seikyotai”.

Track 10

I’m home, Little Bird.

Oh? You look quite well today.

Are you feeling alright? I thought you’d be tired from the long journey.

You must be happy that you’ve been able to go out. We’re still a long way from Edo though. We’ll be staying at several places along the way, like we are now. We’ve got keep our strength up.

[00:49]
Ah, here you go. It’s kintsuba [1].

Sano gave it to me just now. It seems to be pretty expensive. I’m giving it to you.

Ah. We were going around a lot of places looking for new members. There was a new sweet shop near the dojo Sano visited today. The shop was giving them out to celebrate its opening.

Ah, I’m alright. There’s only one anyway.

Eh? You’ll give me half?

Thank you. I suppose I’ll take it then.

[01:48]
Ah… It tastes good. That’s just what I’d expect from good quality sweets!

Did you like it too?

How about we go and thank Sano together sometime?

Eh? You want to eat other sweets?

That shop is a little far from here, so I couldn’t let you walk there.

If you really want some, I’ll buy them for you, so just wait.

Eh? You want to go somewhere?

Hmm… I see.

Then how about we go for a walk together now?

There’s a nice lake around here. It’s not that far away, so it should be fine.

[02:48]
Haha. I’ll carry you if you get tired.

Alright, let’s go then.

Okay, take my hand. Here we go!

We’re here. Alright, sit there.

[03:53]
One of the locals told me about this place. You can see the mountains on the other side, can’t you? There’s bright red sunset over there when it gets to dusk.

We’re here at the right time, so I think we’ll be seeing it soon.

You’re looking forward to it?

Right… So am I.

I wonder if birds often gather here? There are quite a lot of them.

What’s the matter? You’re spacing out.

You envy the birds for being able to fly in the sky?

You want to fly in the sky too, Little Bird?

[04:53]
Come here.

You can’t do that. It’s no good if you don’t stay by my side.

Don’t decide to fly away into the sky all by yourself.

I want you to stay by my side forever.

Your kisses are always so clumsy.

But you’re fine that way. You don’t have to know how to kiss.

[06:01]
Hmm? What is it?

Ah, the sunset.

Oh. I thought your face had turned red, but it was actually the sun setting.

It’s bright red and beautiful. If only this time could continue forever.

For a while, we watched over the blood red sunset as it faded away.

[07:02]
I wonder how much longer I’ll be able to see the beautiful landscape with you.

I quickly held back the tears which were about to fall.

The more I look back on the past, the less I understand. When did you end up being this important to me?

We stayed in that place until the crimson sky had turned dark.

Hey. What were you thinking as you saw the sun set? That day, I strongly wished that your mind was at peace.

[1] Kintsuba – A sweet made from bean paste cut into squares and fried in batter.

Track 11

Hey, are you awake? You fell asleep while watching the sunset.

Jeez, you can fall asleep anywhere.

It was beautiful though, wasn’t it? I’m glad I got to see it with you.

What’s the matter? You’re asking for my attention…

Thank you?

[00:43]
No, I should be the one thanking you. I wouldn’t have thought about going to the lake if it wasn’t for you. I got to see this landscape because of you. Thank you.

You’re smiling a lot now. When I first saw you at the headquarters, you always looked scared and I thought you were a bad tempered person.

Hey. Have I been able to keep the promise of making sure you don’t get lonelier?

I see. I’m relieved then.

[01:51]
You can relax too. I’ll always be by your side from now on, you see.

You smell nice. I wonder why, it’s not as if you just had a bath. I’m the only one who gets to experience your scent this close, aren’t I?

You like being kissed, don’t you? You look dazed and you seem comfortable. I like kissing you too.

[02:55]
It’s like we’re melting together. It excites me.

I want to show you what you look like to me. You close your eyes slightly and concentrate hard.

Did you know that you hold onto the edge of my kimono when something feels good?

You didn’t know, did you? I’m sure you don’t hold on tight, so you’re doing it without thinking. But I’m happier about you doing it without thinking.

[03:50]
Do you understand that feeling?

Come on. Tilt your head.

Did that hurt?

What did I do? I left a mark on you.

Proof that you’re my lover.

It’s most noticeable on your neck. If I do this, strange men won’t approach you, will they?

[04:52]
As long as you’ve got this mark, I’ll be able to think that you won’t go anywhere. I want to make lots of marks on you.

Hmm? You’re not interested in other men?

Haha. I see. You’re right. There’s no man as good as me.

Just kidding.

Since falling in love with you, I’ve stopped caring about attention from other women. I even think that other women aren’t even necessary in this world.

[05:54]
As long as you stay beside me, that’ll be fine.

You still don’t believe me? Well, it’s true that I was always playing around until I met you. But you understand just how serious I am about you, don’t you?

Hey. Shall we take this off? It’s in the way.

[06:50]
Your skin is really pale. When you were at the headquarters, doing laundry and working in the garden, your skin was much darker. I like you the same either way. No matter what you look like on the outside, you’re still you.

You look cute there.

Hey, concentrate on here more.

Why’d you stop me? Are you still feeling unwell?

You think I’ll catch your illness if we keep going?

[07:49]
You dummy. Isn’t it a bit late to say that? Accepting you and your illness is my intention.

More… You can stay still. I’ll keep going by myself.

I want to take a good look at you as you are.

I think you look thinner than before. It bothered me when I was carrying you back here from the lake. You haven’t been eating much recently because you’ve got no appetite.

[08:52]
You’ve got to make sure to eat well. Right, I’ll make you lots of tasty food tomorrow. We’ll have something special early in the morning to keep your strength up. Then we’ll be able to start making our way to Edo again.

I’m better at cooking than you’d think.

You look like you don’t believe me.

Look forward to tomorrow then. I’ll make you something special to eat.

Why are you looking away? Are you embarrassed to see my body? You see it a lot when I’m training, don’t you?

[09:48]
It’s not a big deal anymore. Or do I look different from before?

Of course that’s right. I’m no longer a soldier, I’m just a man who loves you.

You only belong to me.

You’re sensitive to being touched here, aren’t you?

[10:48]
If I run my hands along here while kissing you, your eyelashes flutter slightly.

How about if I lick you here?

Relax a little.

That’s right.

Does that feel good?

The other thing you seem to like is your ears.

Did that tickle?

[11:49]
You look really cute right now.

I can tell you’re only thinking about me at this moment.

It’s gotten hot, hasn’t it? If only we could melt together with our body heat.

Hey. How are you feeling?

I’m happy that I can feel you too, right now.

This sensation tells me about you more than anything.

I love you, Little Bird. I love you. I’ve never felt this happy before.

[12:54]
I don’t ever want to let go of this time. Kiss me even more.

You’re going to hold onto me? It makes me happy when you desire me like that. It’s good when you’re forward too. It makes me want to stay like this forever.

I wonder if it’s proof that you want me.

[13:59]
You’ve got small hands. Aren’t they only half the size of mine?

Maybe I said too much.

You don’t like that? It’s alright, isn’t it?

I want to love you completely. Your hair, your chest, your fingers…

What is it? You’re too embarrassed to look at me?

Your face is red.

[14:52]
Hey, did you know this? It turns me on when you look away like that.

You’re amazing.

Hey, I want you to tease me even more.

That’s right. Touch me enough to break me.

That’s it.

I know it’s wrong to say this, but sometimes I’m thankful.

[15:50]
I’m glad you were near the Ikedaya that day. If you hadn’t been there, we wouldn’t have even met. It might have been better for you to have not been involved and to be living together happily with your family. But I got to know you instead. I can’t go back to how I was before.

I’m sorry for being this kind of man. I’m sorry I can’t be the kind of man who would honestly wish for your happiness.

Eh? You’re happy? You’re happy that you met me?

[16:52]
I see. That’s what you’re telling me.

Thank you.

I love you, Little Bird.

You’re cute. Why do I love you so much?

I don’t understand. Why does my heart hurt so much?

[17:51]
Help me, Little Bird.

Let’s stay together forever from now on.

I like that look on your face.

That happy look on your face is the one I like the most.

Only show it to me from now on.

Thank you for loving me.

[18:53]
Shall I wipe off your sweat?

Wait a minute.

I’ll go out shopping tomorrow morning. Just as promised, I’ll make you something to get your strength up.

What would you like to eat? Perhaps it’d be good to buy a local speciality.

Is there anything else you need? I’ll look for anything you need.

Huh? You want to draw some pictures?

Hmm… That’s great.

[19:51]
I’ve got paper and brushes among my things, so I suppose we don’t need to buy them.

Use them as much as you like. Draw a picture of me too.

I’m sure you’ll draw something really weird looking. I’m looking forward to seeing it.

I think I’m done drying you off. Put your arm through the sleeve.

Alright, there we go.

I’m going to put the blanket on you.

Are you cold?

[20:45]
I see. I know there are two beds, but how about we share one tonight?

Alright, I’m getting in then.

It really is a bit small. But I suppose that’s alright.

Come on, come closer to me.

Good night.

Track 12

Ah, it turned out pretty well!

I’m amazing! I bet Little Bird will be surprised when she finds out I can cook!

Thanks for letting me borrow the kitchen, landlady.

Alright, I suppose I’ll go and wake her up.

Little Bird! It’s morning!

[00:52]
Hey, I’ve made a really tasty breakfast. I’m proud of it! Let’s eat it together!

Little Bird?

Come on, wake up. It’s morning.

Little Bird…?

I see.

You did your best until now.

[01:52]
But if only you could have stayed with me a little longer…

You only just promised that we’d be together forever.

How does it feel to fly in the sky?

Can you see me from up there?

Hey.

[02:58]
I love you, Little Bird.

I love you.

Damn it! Why? Why?!

[04:30]
Hey, Little Bird. You’re a cruel person, aren’t you?

If you knew this would happen, then why didn’t you say anything?

The day I left the inn, I found a letter from you among our belongings. You were lying when you said you wanted to draw, you actually wanted to write down your last feelings. There was a shakily written letter, with only the words “thank you for staying by my side” on it. Beside those words was a badly drawn picture of me.

[05:30]
You appeared unexpectedly and opened up a great hole in my heart when you suddenly flew towards the sky.

I think of you when I look at the blue sky. Your skin was pale and you smiled an unclouded smile at me.

I wonder if I was able to protect you until the end. Saying “thank you” to me feels like you were talking in the past. I’m still by your side now.

[06:28]
As long as you’re in my heart, I’ll always be by your side. So there’s no need to feel lonely.

Hey. Will you watch over me from where you are? I think I’m going to live as a soldier for a little longer, here in Japan. I’ll try to become strong, so that I won’t be ashamed of myself when I’m reunited with you in the skies.

[07:25]
I’ll definitely see you again. I’ll hold my feelings for you deep in my heart and take hold of my sword once more. Amidst this blue sky, I’m going to try and see this chaotic era through until the end. So please wait for me until the day we meet again. You are the person who is most important to me in the world.

Track 13

I’m Maeno Tomoaki, the voice of Nagakura Shinpachi. I’ll be using the dummy head mic for the free talk too. The recording has just finished, and I’ve got several questions about my thoughts on the recording itself.

[00:27]
Right… When I first saw the script, it was about 80 pages long. Most of it was filled with Shinpachi’s lines and I thought “what am I going to do about this?” I read the script, prepared to finish it by the end of the day. I was nervous about the length of the recording and thought “can I really record it in that time?”

[01:08]
Well… The recording was somehow completed in four hours, without any trouble. I was reminded that dummy head mics have their own, unique difficulties.

Alright, next question.

[01:28]
What scene left the greatest impression when you played Nagakura Shinpachi? Mention any scene you would particularly like the listeners to hear.

In this romantic story with a strong storyline, it’s difficult for me to think of just one scene. I’d like it if everyone who listened had their own opinion and felt “this is the scene I like most” about a particular scene.

I used the dummy head mic quite a lot, so I feel like those parts are particularly worth listening to. I’d be glad if you were satisfied with those. When I hear the whole thing I’d like to give my own thoughts on it too.

[02:31]
Were there any similarities between you and Shinpachi?

Similarities, huh… I guess that we both like girls?

Hmm… I’m not that good at sword fighting and I’m not as handsome either. I might not be able to find other similarities.

Ah! But I can cook. I’m not sure whether I’d say I’m talented though. We might be similar because I do a little cooking.

[03:08]
Do you have a favourite member of the Shinsengumi?

Since I grew up with Rurouni Kenshin [1], Saito Hajime left the greatest impression on me and is the one I feel most familiar with. But I quite like the Shinsengumi in general and I’ve appeared at events wearing the Shinsengumi happi coat [2]. I also own a happi. I like the Shinsengumi, so I’m really happy to appear in this work.

[04:05]
Could you say something about the character you played?

I’d hope that you’re listening to this free talk after hearing the main story. I tried to imagine the feeling of losing the person I love the most when I did the recording, but I don’t have a personal experience of something like that, so my performance may have been limited by my imagination. I tried to adjust myself to that.

In the end, Shinpachi overcomes the death of the person he loves the most and does what he needs to. I think he must be a strong person for him to say something like “please wait for me until then”, so I’d like him to be happy.

[05:12]
How did you feel about using the dummy head mic?

Right… Dummy head mics really…make your back hurt. That’s how I felt. There are some scenes where you have to bend down and it makes your back hurt when you’ve got to stay in that position. From now on, I think I’ll be appearing in more projects that use a dummy head mic, so I’m going to increase my experience of that.

[05:57]
Last of all, please give a message to everyone listening.

Right… I know this series is a very popular one. I’ve joined the series in this second season and I came to the recording studio with a sense of responsibility towards building upon the first series. If there is a chance, I’d like to take my responsibility further and play Nagakura Shinpachi again. I hope you’ll continue to support this series.

Thank you very much. I’m sorry if some parts were too provocative to listen to.

This was Maeno Tomoaki, the voice of Nagakura Shinpachi.

[1] Rurouni Kenshin – A series set during the early Meiji era (1868-1912), about the life of a former assassin of the shogunate.
[2] Happi coat – A straight sleeved jacket often worn at festivals.

    Thank you very much !!!!

  2. Omg this was amazing, i really like Shinpachi now oh gosh. T_T Keep working hard Saki-san.

    • Saki

Me too! I’m looking forward to him having a happier story next time. Thanks for your comment ^^

  3. challedon39

Jeez, reading this made me tear up all over again, and right before going to bed, too!

I haven’t listened to Nagakura’s CD in its entirety in a long time, because the ending always upsets me (all that screaming and weeping. . .). He and Harada really got a raw deal in this series: they both finally find someone they can love, only to have her ripped from them. Luckily we’ve been told that they get better endings in Hiyokuroku, so there’s that to look forward to (despite the new series lacking two of my three favorite characters).

Thanks again for another translation, saki-san. This one and Saitou’s are some of the ones I’ve been looking forward to the most.^^

    • Saki

Hello again Tama! I was really glad when Hiyokuroku was announced, but I’m a little sad about the lack of Kondo and Hijikata too. Although they’re not among my favourites, I really enjoyed their stories ^^

  4. thanks a lot! I’ve been waiting for this!

  5. it was expected ending but never expected in same time , the story wasn’t strong enough between the heroin . but still good to know more about the story of the troops , and how does it feel to leave the loyalty in place we were belong to .. how cruel to leave .. I know there is reasons but *sigh* he might be feel lonely by this way . The best track is the end especially his feeling after losing her .. every words were touched ..(I”m too emotional person sorry to like that part XD)

thank you for translating !! I only enjoy reading yours translate! thank you for not writing the expressions , it make the story more reality by understanding by ourselves what happen exactly while listening , I really like surprising >u<
thanks again for hard working !!

  6. Mikucchan

Heart break ? The new characters, Sano and Shinpachi, didn’t even have happy routes this season. Losing the only person keeping them sane during war is so unbearable. Shinpachi knew it the whole time, too, which made his situation more cruel. *sigh*

Thank you for the translation, Saki-san! Thanks for translating Maeno-san’s cast talk as well.

    • Saki

You’re welcome, mikucchan! I hope this next season of Wasurenagusa will be a happier one for Sano and Shinpachi.

  7. yamahakiDuyen

Thanks for all the hard work!
Even though I knew what would happen at the end, Shinpachi’s weeping broke my heart DX
